Thumbs, May 7, 2005

Thumbs have become the big thing over the past two weeks or so. Both babies have started sucking on their thumbs (or assorted fingers) as a self-calming behavior. Because of this, we don't usually swaddle them any more. Now, they only get swaddled if it seems like they are disturbing themselves with their arms and legs flailing.

Sleep--despite some early signs of longer sleep (five hours at a stretch!) we seem to be reverting now. A few nights ago we were in the two to four hour range, but they seem to be getting back to a five hour stretch and then another stretch of three to five hours.

Both of our kids are very interactive now. They will play and smile, especially if you tickle their stomachs. They are also looking at things that are farther away. They have had stranger recognition for a while now.

The babies had their 8-week checkup yesterday. They survived their shots with the expected crying. Andrew is now 14 lbs, and Owen is staying close at 12 lbs 2 oz.

We went to the Vancouver ceili last night--that was a lot of fun. The boys seemed to enjoy the music--they even got to dance with daddy briefly.
